DTN COMMENTS: Cattle feeding country remains quiet this afternoon with
just a few bids in Nebraska on the table. Light to moderate business was
reported on Wednesday and Thursday with Northern dressed deals done at
mostly $353 to $355, $10 to $12 higher than the prior week's weighted
averages. Southern live sales were marked at $230, $6 higher than last
week's weighted average basis Kansas. It's looking like the bulk of
business has essentially been completed for the week, although some
cleanup trade here and there may be reported.
Today's slaughter totaled 105,000 head, 10,000 less than both a week and
year ago. Saturday's kill is estimated at 7,000 head, bringing the weekly
total to 596,000 head, 4,000 below the prior week, and down 14,000 from
2024. Live cattle futures closed mostly sharply lower, off 57 to 145,
while feeder issues ended the day with all contracts down sharply, off
247 to 430. Beef cutouts are expected to close mixed with light to
moderate box movement.
